FIORELLO H. LAGUARDIA HIGH SCHOOL OF MUSIC & ART AND PERFORMING ARTS

New York, NY

laguardia ragtime

The dual mission of this extraordinary specialized high school is to provide each student with professional preparation in conservatory arts education and in college preparatory academic education.

HISTORY
A Brief History of LaGuardia Arts A Tradition of Excellence in Arts Education (The "Fame" School)

laguardia logolaguardia bldg

In 1936, New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia founded the High School of Music & Art in order to provide a facility where the most gifted and talented public school students of New York City could pursue their talents in art or music, while also completing a full academic program of instruction. In 1948, the School of Performing Arts was created to provide training in performance skills to students who wished to prepare for professional careers in dance, music or drama.
The two schools became one organization in 1961, in anticipation of a move to a single building at Lincoln Center designed to meet the specialized needs of those gifted and talented youngsters chosen to attend.

In 1969, the Board of Education honored Mayor LaGuardia by naming the new building at Lincoln Center after him, and in September, 1984, after more than 20 years of waiting, Music & Art and Performing Arts came together in their new and magnificent facility, complete with a state-of-the-art concert hall and theatre.

laguardia dancelaguardia hairlaguardia painting

LaGuardia Arts is one of the original four specialized high schools in New York City, as established by the New York State Legislature in 1972.  The Hecht Calandra Act provides for the "establishment and maintenance" of this specialized school of the arts, as well as Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School. This act also defines the admissions criteria for LaGuardia Arts.  Students are admitted on the basis of potential and achievement, as demonstrated in a demanding and competitive audition, and a review of their academic records.  Currently there are nine specialized high schools in New York City, and LaGuardia Arts remains the sole specialized school of the arts.

It is important to note that LaGuardia Arts was the first school in the nation to provide a free, publicly funded program for students with unique talents in the arts. This model has been replicated in most major cities throughout the country.

Over the years, the school has earned an international reputation for excellence, the accomplishments of our graduates serving as the most vivid proof of the value and worth of our specialized programs of instruction. Our alumni have distinguished themselves in virtually every field of endeavor, including the arts and sciences as well as public service and other professions.

Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts, an outstanding school designed to deliver visual/media arts and the performing arts at a professional level, provides a strong academic, athletic, and technological program for all its students. Its safe and caring environment inspires lifelong learning and a desire for personal excellence.

wexford woo Visual and Media Arts

The Visual & Media Arts Department at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts provides breadth and depth in its dynamic programs. We are proud of our Special Series Art program, which requires a portfolio audition for entry. It is an intensive four-year conservatory program, designed to lead to careers in visual and media arts. As the Special Series Art students earn their high school diplomas, they experience a variety of art courses-- 12 art credits in total--the most art credits available to a secondary student in Toronto District School Board, the largest school district in Canada. Also unique to our program is that a student who wishes to return after grade 12, can enroll as a 'Portfolio' student and continue studies in art and other disciplines.

Specialized, versatile and dedicated art teachers and visiting artists alike are members of the professional arts community. Visual & Media Arts cover a range of courses in fine arts, design, film/video/animation and photography. We help students prepare their portfolios for college or university fine arts program interviews. We give them the creative freedom to make their mark. Alumni are represented in galleries across the world and in diverse careers in art and design.

Performing Arts

Bethune ElementaryThe Performing Arts department offers interdisciplinary performance-based program at the professional level. We offer two unique auditioned streams: music theatre and drama focus, each consisting of two credits per year, designed to prepare students for college or university entrance and a performing arts career. Our students and alumni appear in dinner theatre, major musicals, films and television productions. They grace the stage at Shaw Festival and at theatres across Canada. Teachers and visiting artists are part of the professional arts community.

Bethune Elementary

At Wexford CSA, we strive to meet the needs of all of our students and, to this end, we have developed a new stream of programming. Our 'Open' level art courses and a Comprehensive Program help to promote the arts throughout the entire school. The Comprehensive Arts Program focuses on enhanced opportunities in the areas of arts but does not require the external time commitment of the Performing Arts Program or the Special Series Visual and Media Arts Program. Students who are offered a spot at Wexford CSA in Comprehensive Arts take two optional performing or visual arts or arts-related courses every year.  In addition, students have an opportunity to enter the Specialized Performing Arts or the Special Series Visual and Media Arts program through the re-audition process if they wish.

wexford music manArts Facilities

The Wexford Art Centre has large studios equipped for each discipline, including a dark room, a film editing suite, and a two-story sculpture studio. Performing arts students learn in dedicated spaces as well: dance and drama studios, music room, theatre auditorium, a new black box rehearsal space, and a state-of-the-art scene shop for set design and construction.

We feel fortunate to teach art students who are creative, motivated, and caring individuals. Our students play a vital role not only in the Visual & Media Arts or the Performing Arts programs, but also in helping to create a positive vibe within the Wexford school community.

Through rigorous studio art practice grounded in creative and intellectual inquiry, the program is designed to extend each student's critical thinking abilities.  Oxbow students develop a new sense of identity, self-worth, and confidence that enables them to take more active responsibility for their own learning and lives.

The 16-week Oxbow semester combines an intensive exploration of art and art making with innovative and rigorous academic subjects.  The program is designed to fulfill high school requirements and prepare students for admission to college, university, art/design schools and other post-secondary pursuits.

Living, dining, working and hanging out with other Oxbow students is central to the experience.  Students come to Oxbow from all over the country, from both public high schools and independent schools, and they are always an interesting and diverse group.  Each student's experience as part of this learning community expands awareness of talents and interests and is a big step forward in getting ready for college.  Oxbow students often become friends for life and you'll certainly meet people you will never forget.

The Oxbow School's picturesque 3-acre campus is located in an historic district in Napa-a town of 75,000 that bills itself as "where the Napa Valley begins"-and on a big, sweeping bend in the Napa River, called an "oxbow," which is how the school got its name.

There are college-style dormitories, a dining hall, gardens, several faculty residences and contemporary teaching studio/classroom buildings specially designed for Oxbow by one of the world's leading architects, Stanley Saitowitz.

The school is located within walking distance of cafes, shops and theaters in downtown Napa, just an hour away from the many arts and cultural attractions of San Francisco and the Bay Area, and within day-trip distance of the Sierras and the Pacific Coast.

Students at Oxbow are closely supervised, mentored and supported by faculty and the residential life team-but there is lots to do and explore.

Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences, located in Seattle's Capitol Hill Area and accredited by the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools, is a rigorous college preparatory school whose mission is to prepare students for college and life.

From its modest beginnings in 1983, the school took all 50 students on a journey of academic and artistic exploration. Twenty five years later, and now 600 students strong in grades 6-12, Seattle Academy has developed a unique approach to education combining Academics, Arts, Athletics, Outdoor Experiences, and daily use of Technology into what has been termed, "A Culture of Performance," integrating creative thinking, presentation skills, and an ability to take risks into all aspects of the educational process.
saas 1

At Seattle Academy, we continue to find innovative ways to integrate the Arts into our school community as part of our culture of performance. As part of our final exam process each trimester, the entire school assembles for a performance by all Arts classes. Whether performing at the end of trimester, developing award winning films, presenting portfolios for review, or participating in our outstanding vocal program, students are continually challenged to find innovative ways to explore the range of opportunities at Seattle Academy.

saas 3

Though students may focus on an Arts area, they are both required and encouraged to explore all the Art forms resulting in skill sets which are transferable to not only other art forms but toward academic excellence as well. Whether development of a world premiere musical based on the novel The Secret of Santa Vittoria or creating and testing software to assist actors in memorizing lines, the Arts help us define "The Culture of Performance."

THE FINE ARTS CENTER

"The new state-of-the art Fine Arts Center is most certainly the resultof an architect who actually listened to our artist teachers but, too, it is just as certainly the result of the many sessions held atArts Schools Network conferences on how to "design your new building," on how to work and talkwith architects, and on effective fund-raising. The debt I owe to Arts Schools Networkis visible in every studio."
